Checkpoint Caches

Long awaited, here are the rules for placement of checkpoint caches. These rules were developed after a conversation with some cachers who are in the race.

1. The cache should be a cache that the owner is physically able to maintain. Caches that require someone else to maintain due to distance will not be considered (extenuating circumstances may be allowed…contact me).

2. A cache may not be placed for the sole purpose of dropping a racing TB you have in your possession.

3. Cache maintainance should be done in a timely manner.  Maintainance needs should be addressed within 3 days if a racing TB is located in the cache, otherwise it should be addressed within 7 days. If something prevents you from maintaining the cache in a timely manner, and you can’t find someone to check on it, please contact me.

4. Only physical caches are allowed as checkpoint caches.

5. Checkpoint caches should be a minimum distance away from other checkpoint caches.  Distance requirements are based on population of the nearest town/city.  If the population where the nearest cache is located falls under a different distance requirement, than the two distances will be averaged.  For example, Cache 1 requires 100 miles while Cache 2 requires 40 miles.  Final minimum distance would be 70 miles.   Requirements are as follows:

Population = X

X < 50,000 => 100 miles
X = 50,000 – 100,000 => 70 miles
X = 100,000 – 500,000 => 40 miles
X = 500,000 – 1 million => 20 miles
X = 1 – 2 million => 10 miles
X > 2 million => 5 miles

6. No more than two checkpoint caches per cacher.

If you have a cache that you would like to submit, please post a message on this page, or e-mail me directly through the Geocaching website.  Please included your e-mail address if you contact me through the geocaching site (I can see addresses if you post a comment on this page).  Also, please include the GC # of the cache if it is already published, or the proposed town/city/area if a planned cache.  All caches must go through an approval process. If you are unsure if the cache will meet the distance requirement, contact me. I can tell you quickly enough.

An official Great TB Race Checkpoint Cache logo is still in the planning stages.  If your cache is approved as a checkpoint cache, you will be notified by e-mail.  Once approved, you may advertise it’s status on the cache page.

The following is a list of approved caches. I will update with links soon:

  1. Hi,

    I think I had sent you this cache as a possible checkpoint cache GC1B7FZ. BBaka”L” and I own and maintaine this cache.It is near the Minneapolis Airoprt and serves as a great stop off for bugs traveling through town.

  2. Is there a banner we can use on the checkpoint cache pages?

  3. Still working on the banner. Though, if someone has graphic design skills and has an idea to try, let me know. You’d likely do a better job than myself.

  4. Please take a look at my cache #GC1EHC5 as a Checkpoint Cache. I drive by my cache every day on the way to work, which means I am able stop by regularly. It’s well hidden and not subject to being muggled. It’s also well visited and local cachers know about it to drop off and pick up trackables. This is currently a 4 quart lock n lock, but I could replace it with a larger container if needed.

  5. I have my lovely graphic design student daughter working on a banner – I was thinking of an ammo can with checkmarks coming out of it like Pandora’s Box.

  6. Hi Trip – you can use this cache of mine as well for a Checkpoint Cache. It is very near my daughter’s residence in South Africa.

    Safari View by cincol (GC181AE)

  7. Dang for all the time I spend I on the pc in the geo-stuff now I find this.. I would have loved to join in this.. Well maybe next year.. Unless you have a mid year game

  8. Hi TripCyclone

    Another Checkpoint cache if you like – In south Africa = Eagle’s Nest by Carbon Hunter (GC17AKC)

    And I know we can get a few more in SA too -as we have some great cachers there who love TB’s and races.

    Will also have cincol’s son – cslyoda setting up a new cache in Brisbane in australia soon too – which can also become a checkpoint -and cincol also has a few in Ireland.

  9. Please take A look at my cache GC1DHZ4 Just Off The Creek. I would like to make it a check point cache. I drive by it lots and have no problem maintaining it. Its a large peanut butter container so would be lots of room for travel bugs to be dropped. Also in a area that doesn’t see much muggles. Let Me know what you think. Thanks nike_sens

  10. I have a travel bug hotel in my front yard, if you’d like to use it as a checkpoint.
    GCP29W is in Hermitage, one of the suburbs of Nashville, TN.

  11. Sehr gute Seite. Ich habe es zu den Favoriten.

  12. Hi Trip. If you want to you can add my cache GC1JXPP as a check point here in SW Colo.
