Last year’s contestants received a standard message they could put onto their travel bug page.  For the most part, it helps explain things in another location.  It isn’t a requirement, and several racers made some very cool profile pages for their travel bugs.  I still feel that having a basic message about the race helps, so today’s post is focused on setting up the information on your travel bug.

There are two main things to focus on, a message about the race and the points.  When activating or editing a travel bug, there are two parts where you can create a message, the Current Goal and About This Item.  These are the two items we are looking at today.  However, I should state a few things about this post first.

The example text for the goal will be both italicized, offset, and blue, compared to the rest of this post.  For the purposes of the Current Goal, you would just need to copy and paste the message.  An example Points Table is designed to go into the About This Item section, and it will involve HTML codes.  The Geocaching site will sometimes eliminate the coding when you submit the changes.  If you decide to include this table, make sure to check your page when you are done.  You should see an actual table with columns.  If all you see in the About This Item section is a paragraph of text, you will need to go back into the editing page for the item and copy everything a second time, then resubmit.  This typically fixes the problem.  If you continue to have issues, contact me and I’ll take a look at it.  For an example of what this would look like, go to TIGGER BOUNCE, my entry to the race (minus a photo…haven’t done that yet).  All of this information can be edited by clicking on the “Edit This Item” link on the top right side of your travel bug’s page, right underneath “Add A Log Entry”.

Current Goal:

For the goal, we are going to keep the message simple.  It will briefly explain the race, very similar to the tags that will be attached to each travel bug.

I am a contestant in the 2nd Annual Great TB Race. The race begins January 1st, 2010 and will last until December 31st, 2010. The winners of the race will earn prizes. The race is about earning points. Points are earned every time I meet one of the goals listed below (also found on my attached tag). But be careful. Any points that might be earned by dipping me in more than one cache will be voided. I only get points for the final cache you place me in. There are also monthly bonus goals. All race information, including rules and the monthly bonus goals, can be found at The Great TB Race website. Help me win the race by keeping me moving.

About This Item:

It has been discovered that when copying text from WordPress (this site) to the Geocaching site, Quotation Marks don’t copy right, particularly with links.  Look at the first two sentences  in the section to copy below.  See the quotes that surround the web address to this site?  After you copy this text, delete those two quotation marks.  This corrects the problem.  If you don’t, it won’t link to this site and instead will redirect you to an error page within the Geocaching site.  Thanks to Brad Hancock and SearchJaunt.  Brad pointed it out but I chalked it up to an error because it worked on my TB.  SearchJaunt later had the same problem and figured out the problem what was causing it.  I’m using Brad’s method to fix it because it results in no change to the original procedure.

For this section, you need to copy the text EXACTLY as at it appears below.  If you have something else that you would like to put into this section, make sure it goes in either before or after everything else or it can mess up the coding.  Once you are ready to go, just hit Submit.

Monthly goals will change each month and will not be posted on here.  To see them, you must go to the <a href=https://tbrace.wordpress.com>Great TB Race</a> website.

The following goals are regular goals in place for the entire race:
<p><table cellpadding=”2″ cellspacing=”2″ border=”1″ bordercolor=”silver”>

That should be everything.  I arrived in Dallas last night and am currently working on checking in all of the travel bugs that arrived down here in the last week.  We have a lot of them here to go through so expect an update to the check in page later this evening.
