REGISTRATION FOR THE 2010 GREAT TB RACE IS NOW CLOSED. FOLLOW THE SITE TO KEEP UP WITH THE CONTESTANTS THROUGH THE YEAR. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE ENTRIES.

It’s at that point where I decide whether to do another race next year. I’ve learned some things about how to manage and update the race throughout the year. One major issue is that I need help, particularly with keeping up with race stats. So, before I announce details about the 2010 race, I will put this out there:

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED TO HELP MANAGE ASPECTS OF THE 2010 RACE. SEE DETAILS BELOW.

With that said, let’s continue with information about the 2010 race and how to enter.

The 2010 race will employ the same basic rules. Travel Bugs will race for one year. A series of goals will be established and every time a goal is met, points are earned. The Travel Bug with the most points at the end of the year will win the race. Prizes will be allotted to the top three finishers, with a guarantee that those three spots will receive prizes with an equivalent value of the purchase of a Travel Bug and shipping a travel bug to me. Estimated cost of that is between $10 – $15, so total prize value is set at $15 dollars for Third Place. If enough prizes are donated to the prize pool, additional prize catagories may be developed.

Here are some planned changes for 2010:

  • In 2009, contestants were given instructions on attaching “Info Cards” and “Goal Sheets” to the travel bug.  With changes in race rules, those attachments weren’t as up to date as they could be.  This time, contestants will not be asked to do this.  I will take care of making a standard Info Card and Goal Sheet to attach before the start of the race.  This will include lamination to protect the cards.
  • In 2009, the race started with a cache placed in Kansas City, MO.  All competing travel bugs were sent to me and placed into this cache so that everyone had a fair start.  In 2010, the race will begin with a New Year’s Day event in Dallas, TX.
  • Point values will be adjusted.  Harder to obtain goals will be worth more.  Points will also be spread out across a larger point range, instead of 1 – 5 points like the 2009 race.
  • Checkpoint caches will not be incorporated into the race.  It didn’t play out like planned and not even a handful of travel bugs ever saw one.
  • Rules will be put into place regarding travel bugs that go MIA to allow for the possibility of reentry with a copy tag.

Additional changes may develop before the start of the race.

Entering the Race:
Now, for the part you are looking for, how to enter the race.  If you would like to enter the race, post a comment on THIS page.  For your name, please use your caching name.  Please ensure that you include an e-mail address I can reach you at (it will only be seen by me and will not be released to anyone).  You may enter one travel bug per person, not account.  So if you are a caching couple or family, each person may have an entry.  Please indicate how many entries there will be in your comment.  If you would like to volunteer to help with the race, please state so in your comment.

As I receive entries, I will contact you with instructions for entering your travel bug, including where to send it.  You will be required to send me your travel bug so that all entries are starting at the same point.

And one last thing.  There is a deadline for entry.  Dallas is the starting point because that’s where I will be on New Year’s Day.  However, I will be traveling down there sooner than that.  To ensure that all travel bugs are in my possession, there are two deadlines for entry: international and domestic.  All travel bugs should aim to be in my possession by Wednesday, December 30th.

  • THE DEADLINE FOR INTERNATIONAL ENTRY IS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19TH.  INTERNATIONAL ENTRIES WILL TAKE LONGER TO SHIP TO ME.
  • THE DEADLINE FOR DOMESTIC ENTRY IS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25TH.

Depending on when you enter, you may receive one of two addresses to ship your package too, an address in Kansas City, Missouri or an address in Dallas, Texas.  I will be heading down to Dallas the weekend of the International Deadline.  I encourage international entries to check out shipping times for both to get an idea of how long it will take the package to arrive, and determine which destination will get the package in my hands (and avoid it arriving in Missouri after I head down to Texas).

If there are any questions, please look through the other pages on this site to see if they might have already been answered during the 2009 race.  If you still have a question, please refrain from posting the question on this page.  Send me a message through MY GEOCACHING ACCOUNT.

And begin the entries.
